Missing: Empathy genes

From Monday night’s Tea Party Express Republican debate in Tampa, everything you need to know about Republicans:

Blitzer asked if under Paul’s libertarian philosophy, a sick man without insurance should be allowed to die in the hospital rather than have the state pay his medical bills. Before Paul could answer that question, shouts of “yes!” and cheering bubbled up from the audience.

Update: Partial Transcript

Blitzer >> You’re a physician, Ron Paul, you’re a doctor. You know something about this subject. Let me ask you this hypothetical question. A healthy 30-year-old young man has a good job, makes a good living, but decides I’m not going to spend 200 or $300 a month because I’m healthy, i don’t need it. But something terrible happens, all of a sudden he needs it. Who will pay if he goes into a coma, who pays for that?
Paul >> In a society that you accept welfarism and socialism, he expects the government to take care of him.
Blitzer >> What do you want?
Paul >> What he should do is whatever he wants to do and assume responsibility for himself. My advice to him would have a major medical policy.
Blitzer >> He doesn’t have that and he needs intensive care for six months. Who pays?
Paul >> That’s what freedom is all about, taking your own risks. This whole idea that you have to prepare and take care of everybody —
Audience >> [applause]
Blitzer >> but congressman, are you saying that society should just let him die?
Audience >> [shouts of “yeah!”]

A friend asked me if the answer would be different if the question had been “What if your 30 year old son was the one without health insurance … should he die?”

And the answer is that it would have to be each and every one of those people in the audience’s 30 year old son because Republicans simply don’t have empathy.

  1. Republicans see Utopia as the place where everyone’s decisions, wise or unwise, become that person’s responsibility.

It is either a lack of empathy or a lack of imagination or both.

When people wonder why politics is important and why the 2012 Presidential election is important, they do not need to look any further than this.

  2. Yeah!!! Let them die…wait they cheered that…oy…I miss my J Crew…why do you not post these on DK?…or am I missing something?…Peace always.

    • Is that you, GTP? I miss all you guys also.

I have not posted original writing on DKos since last October except for Miss Mayta (she really is unique to DK). I wrote on BPI Campus for a while and now I am here. I may do some crossposting but not until my peeps come back!

  3. Yes, it is I…I hope you start crossposting, whatever that may be, it sounds good…I found Trashy at a place called Motley Moose, YEAH!!!…I’ve been lurking…I even logged in to tip OS, it seemed important to show support…I will see you Sunday at midnight EDT (for people who insist on time zones), if I don’t see you at MM.
    I guess I should have said…
    Peace always,

    • Yes, sberel is at both MM and The People’s View. I decided I can’t stretch myself that thin.

Thank you for tipping Otteray Scribe. I am sure he appreciated it. Some things transcend boycotts: you don’t boycott kindness.

  4. JanF, since I can’t comment on DK I hoped I could share a couple thing here, sorry about hijacking your thread.

Regarding OS and BR; I can’t put into words my sorrow and concern I feel. Please just let them know I join with the rest of J Town in their well wishes and concern for them both and their families.

This has been a rough week, a real roller coaster with great highs and great lows. After talking with trashy, I think I understand why you don’t post these at DK. It is sad they we must fear the rancor of others on a site where we should all be working as a team.

Here is a link to what should have been my J Town comment for the day. I know I goof around a lot, but I came to DK for serious reasons.

Peace to you and all my J friends, GTP

    • Thanks, GTP. Posted at J Town.

      Thanks for stopping by!

      • Please include trashablanca, sberel, floja roja and bubba to the list in sending our condolences to belinda and her family.

        Thank you, Glen

        • Done

  5. Weigh in here on Community Norms: (1+ / 0-)
I will take them all under advisement and will report back.

How about no more plumber jokes…just kidding…I love plumber jokes…Good morning JanF.

    • How about “No more cracks about plumbers!”?

      • Exactly.

I was just checking J Town…now PP…cheeze whiz…when I get back, I’ll bring my toilet auger and see if I can clear those clots out for good.

        • I know. 😦
